Super Zero

Episode 28 – Man of Steel

Man of Steel

It’s Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, and Alia and Matt are baffled. Questions abound: does Snyder deserve to get away with this? Is there a character named Dawn in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? And if you change Superman this much, why are you bothering to call him Superman at all?

The penultimate Super Zero brings you the ultimate superhero in less-than-fine form, in 2013’s MAN OF STEEL!

I would recommend the animated movie Superman vs the Elite, as an example of how to do a modern optimistic Superman that fits into today’s world. It’s based off the comic book called “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” and was reflective on how does the so called “boy scout” of superheroes fit in with newer dark & gritty superheroes that were popping up in the 1990’s. The movie was released in 2012, a year before Man of Steel, but still feels like a response to the direction that DC are going in now.

I look forward to the final episode on Tank Girl & Supergirl! It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen Supergirl, but I absolutely love the Tank Girl movie. Also it mirrors the ending of the first season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not only because it’s a movie that Alia knows more about than Matt, but because they are both based on more modern black & white indie comics. Also if you wonder how the hell a major studio approved Tank Girl having those crazy mutant kangaroos, you just have to look a few years earlier at the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for a reason why they really went all in with the Tank Girl craziness.
