If you’ve kept up with See You Next Wednesday at all, you’ll know that our love for the Toronto hip-hop scene here at Modern Superior is strong. Specifically, the never-ending fountain of fresh hip-hop that the HandSolo Records crew release. We discussed the Backburner record Heatwave at length in the past, as well as the monster-fueled output from Swamp Thing. Now, Chokeules – a member of both aforementioned outfits – is set to release his sophomore solo record, titled Stay Up.

Embedded above (maybe you’ve already taken this opportunity to click play on the video, but if you haven’t, now is the time to) is Choke’s brand-new music video for Stay Up‘s debut single “Anonymous”. Filmed around Toronto, the video perfectly captures the city’s Grey-and-Green urban landscape – soundtracked by the song’s funkified guitar lines plucking away with piano flourishes hiding just behind the driving beat. Plus, Choke drops references to Friday The 13th: A New Beginning, Indiana Jones, Reggie Watts, Back to the Future, Black Flag and more. What more do you need?

Hit up Choke’s Bandcamp page to snag your Stay Up pre-order and then head over to Facebook and click “Attending” on his record release party on Friday, July 11th. Here’s some more information on Choke and the new record, for those who need some background:

Chokeules (“choke-you-leez”) is Toronto’s worst kept secret. Originally known for his time with veteran hip hop outfit Toolshed, the prolific emcee has exploded onto the scene since he relocated from London, ON. As both a solo artist and member of Swamp Thing and Backburner, Choke stays busy on stage and in the studio. His sound draws from countless influences, built on a foundation of golden era hip hop. With his sophomore album, Stay Up, Chokeules is at the top of his game, delivering his own style of hardcore boom bap with an occasional sense of humour.”
