For the big 4-0 we decided to talk about a subject that’s been on our radar for quite some time: issues with marketing. To do so, we decided to use the time-travel, rom-com, father-son dramedy About Time and black comedy, buddy-cop dramedy In Bruges. Both films are moving targets when it comes to tone and genre, making them difficult to market. The end result is a series of trailers that can’t possibly begin to touch on each film’s profound impact and value.
At the top of the episode we go in-depth into a few recent trailers you may or may not have heard of: The Defenders, The Dark Tower, and Blade Runner. We also talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, which we’d seen earlier that very day. The whole thing gets delightfully heated by episode’s end as we discuss the issues with marketing in the film industry as a whole, and why, sometimes, exceptional films suffer as a result.
Be warned: spoilers be yar for virtually every film discussed this week!
